The theme of this year's Awareness Week is Mindfulness, which is most certainly something that is not just for those experiencing mental health problems, so feel free to ask for more information about opportunities to get involved with this around the university.
Many people don't realise how much of a problem the stigma of mental health is, so the aim here is to help those who may not be personally affected by mental health issues understand how (and how frequently) discrimination occurs (in the workplace, in society, in education...).
This is where the pledges come in. Pledges are simple promises that people are making to help get to the end off this stigma. Things like "I will check up on a friend or loved one" or "I will stand up to discrimination against mental health if I see it". To make the effort of coming all the way to the JCR worth your while, everyone who makes a pledge will be entered into a raffle to win the most sought after prize: a guaranteed FREE FITZMAS ticket!! Nicky Padfield herself is gunning for this prize with her pledge made earlier today...
If any of you have any questions, want to find out about anything mental health related (e.g. about resources in Fitz/Cambridge), or just to have a chat with me, come in to the JCR this week (I won't be there ALL the time, but I will be there for most of it). I will have hot chocolate, biscuits, and bubble wrap - the perfect revision break!
Stay healthy this exam term,
Jess (Disabilities Officer)
