The Room Booking System
All public rooms are bookable for students free of charge apart from the Grove, the Writing Room and the Parlour which cannot be booked at all.
For a full range of rooms, please visit the Facilities page on the College website.
In order to book a room, email Ms Lorraine Evans (Secretary to the Steward) at stewards.secretary@fitz.cam.ac.uk or visit her office in the corridor just past F-block. Tell her the room and the date and time you will be needing it. She will confirm the availability of the room, provisionally book it and ask you to fill in a room-booking confirmation room. Once this form is sent/given to Lorraine it then gets passed on by her to the relevant College officials for their signatures/approval until finally a completed copy is placed in your pigeon hole.
College regulations state that the proposal for a room must be received by the Steward’s Secretary at least 14 days before the date of the booking. However, if you want to use a room and have missed that deadline, email Lorraine Evans with your reason. If you have problems, please contact the JCR President.
Exceptions:
- The JCR is open 24/7 and does not need to be booked. It is accessible using your College card.
- The Societies Room is also open 24/7 and does not need to be booked. If your College card does not work, please go to the porters.
- The supervision rooms in D-staircase can be booked through the porters.
- The music practice rooms are booked through Ms Katharine Parton (Director of Music). Her email is music@fitz.cam.ac.uk.
The JCR understands that the current room booking system in inadequate and needs reform. It is currently in productive talks with College on this front. It believes:
- The paper based system is too convuluted and rigid and the forms are not student friendly. The JCR is working with IT to develop an online room booking system and is attempting to restructure the forms.
- A 14 days minimum notice period is too high, particularly with the context of 8 week Cambridge terms.

The JCR and the De Smith (TV) Room
We help to maintain and add to the facilities offered in these rooms. If you have any suggestions or complaints regarding these facilities please let us know!
In last year's survey you stated that you'd most like to see the addition of table football and a data projector:
- We've purchased the football table. It's free to play and now sits proudly in the JCR.
- The JMA has provided funds for the data projector. The JCR will aim to purchase this over the Easter vacation.
- The JCR has upgraded our Sky subscription to Sky HD. By subscribing to Sky via CUSU, we have been able to save the JMA approximately £6000 a year.
- The committee has purchased new pool cues, chalk and darts.
- We will look into moving the vending machine in the cafe once these changes have been made.
